Abstract:

Introduction to Prof. Yin-Tien Wang: Yin-Tien Wang received the M.S. degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1988 and Ph.D. degree from University of Pennsylvania in 1992, both in mechanical engineering. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Tamkang University, New Taipei City, Taiwan, where he is in charge of Robotics and Machine Vision courses. His current interests include real-time vision localization and mapping research and the transference of this technology to robotic and nonrobotic application domains.

Prof. Simon X. Yang

Speech Title: Bio-inspired Intelligence with Applications to Autonomous Mobile Robotic Systems

Abstract: Studies of biologically inspired intelligence have made significant progress in both understanding the biological intelligent systems and developing innovative bionic applications to autonomous mobile robotic systems for information acquisition, signal processing, data analysis, decision making, and system control. In this talk, I will start with a very brief introduction to some biologically inspired intelligent computations and their applications to early vision and sensory motion in biological systems. After that, I will focus on our recent research on innovative applications of bio-inspired intelligence to various autonomous mobile robotic systems, such as real-time intelligent sensing, path planning, tracking, control, and teleoperation of autonomous mobile robotic systems, and intelligent real-time coordination and cooperation of multiple mobile robot systems.

Introduction to Prof. Simon X. Yang: Simon X. Yang received the B.Sc. degree in engineering physics from Beijing University, Beijing, China, in 1987, the first of two M.Sc. degrees in biophysics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, in 1990, the second M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Houston, Houston, TX, in 1996, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, in 1999. Dr. Yang is currently a Professor and the Head of the Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the University of Guelph, Guelph, ON, Canada.

Prof. Yang’s research interests include robotics, artificial intelligent, sensors and multi-sensor fusion, wireless sensor networks, control systems, bio-inspired intelligence, machine learning, neural networks, fuzzy systems, and computational neuroscience. Prof. Yang has been very active in professional activities. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Robotics and Automation; an Advisory Editorial Board member of Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing; and an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, and several other journals. He was on the grant review panel of NSERC, CIHR and several other grant agencies. He has involved in the organization of many international conferences.

Prof.Giovanni Muscato

Speech Title:Robots and Drones for Hazardous Environments

Abstract:Robots and drone are useful devices where operations are expensive, tedious or dangerous for humans. Recently the decrease of cost of robotic devices has extended the range of applications of robotic systems particularly in hazardous environments. The cooperation between drones and robots can give further possibilities and open new challenges. In this talk some particular environments and scenarios where robots and drones and their cooperation could be effective, will be reviewed and commented. In particular, four different situations will be described with experimental results: the exploration of active volcanic environments, the search of mines for humanitarian demining, the radioactive waste inspections and the measurement on terrains with high landslide risk. Finally, some conclusions and perspectives for future applications will conclude the talk. 

Introduction to Prof.Giovanni MuscatoGiovanni Muscato received the Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Catania, Catania, Italy, in 1988. After completing graduation, he was with the Centro di Studi sui Sistemi, Turin, Italy. In 1990, he joined the DIEEI  University of Catania, where he is currently a Full-Time Professor of robotics and automatic control and since 2018, Director of the Department. His current research interests includes service robotics and the cooperation between ground and flying robots. He was the coordinator of the EC project Robovolc and is the local coordinator of several national and European projects in robotics. He is the author of more than 300 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings and three books in the fields of control and robotics.
